FIRST CIRCULAR

1) Motivation & Invitation

With the perspective of developments in the study of nuclei far from stability, both theoretically and experimentally, the fundamental issues on the applicability and extension of many-body methods in the study of finite systems under extreme conditions acquire new interests. Many problems such as the effective interactions, nuclear incompressibility, pairing, configuration mixing, role of coupling to continuum, damping of collective motion open new facets when moving to the terra incognita of exotic nuclei.

In this situation we think it is important to have a symposium, referred to hereafter as Symposium, where we can discuss in detail the most important issues raised by researchers in these subjects. With the hope that the issues under discussion will also bring the benefit to the future research after the completion of the RI-beam factory in RIKEN, we have decided to integrate the Symposium into the International workshop on "Nuclear Physics with RIBF", which will take place in RIKEN on March 13 - 17, 2006, and referred to hereafter as Workshop.

A number of topics discussed at the Workshop will be summarized and/or continued to be analyzed at the Symposium.

In this context the Symposium will get together experts from Japan and abroad to discuss one of the most successful methods in nuclear structure physics: mean field theories and related topics.

The topics of the Symposium include:

  • Mean-field models, nuclear energy density functional theory, effective interactions
  • Correlations beyond mean field, RPA and its extensions, collective dynamics
  • Pairing in infinite matter and finite systems
  • Mean-field treatment of loosely-bound systems, coupling to open channels, role of continuum

A number of experts will be invited to attend both the Workshop and the Symposium to present overviews on some most important issues discussed at the Workshop to the Symposium participants.

You are cordially invited to attend the RIKEN Symposium 2006 to report important results of your research and participate in the discussion. We expect to have a numbers of foreign and Japanese experts as well as senior students, and post-doctoral fellows from different institutes and universities in Japan to join this meeting.

The number of participants to the Symposium is limited to around 100 people.

2) Symposium site

The Symposium site is either the conference hall in the New RIBF building, the Okouchi or Nishina Memorial Halls inside the Wako campus of RIKEN (depending on the final number of participants).

An access map to RIKEN can be found at

http://www.riken.jp/engn/r-world/riken/campus/wako/access.html

A map of the campus is available at

http://www.riken.jp/engn/r-world/riken/campus/wako/bldg.html

3) Housing

Participants will stay in Toyoko Inn "Wakoshi Ekimae", a new hotel in Wako city, which is located just in front of the Wakoshi station, and at a walking distance to the Symposium site. The website of this hotel is:

http://www.toyoko-inn.com/e_hotel/00090/

It is the responsibility of all participants to make their room reservation by themselves using the on-line reservation service (in English) or by fax at the above website. The reservation should be made preferably two months before the check-in date.

A limited number of rooms are available for students at the guesthouses inside RIKEN (See (4) below).

4) Registration

The registration fee is:

  • 3,500 Japanese yen per person for professors, senior scientists and accompanying members,
  • 2,000 Japanese yen per person for students.

The fee covers the cost of the reception dinner and refreshment during the Symposium. Participants are requested to pay the registration fee at the registration desk on the first day of the meeting. Payment is accepted in cash only.

Those who wish to attend the Symposium are requested to fill-in the attached form and email it to:

For participants from outside Japan:

Nguyen Dinh Dang

Email: dang@riken.jp

For domestic participants or students, who will stay at RIKEN guesthouse:

M. Yamagami

Email: yamagami@riken.jp

The deadline for receiving the registration has been extended to February 10, 2006.
Registrations received after this deadline will not be accepted.

5) Abstracts

The official language of the Symposium is English. Participants, who wish to give a presentation at the symposium, should prepare the abstracts of their contribution in PDF format within one A4 page and send the abstracts to

For participants from outside Japan:

Nguyen Dinh Dang

Email: dang@riken.jp

For domestic participants:

M. Yamagami

Email: yamagami@riken.jp

Formats other than PDF will be returned to the senders.

The deadline of receiving the abstracts is the same as that of the registration, i.e. February 10,  2006.

All submitted abstracts are posted on the Symposium website at

http://ribf.riken.go.jp/~dang/RIKEN2006.html

6) Presentation

The number of oral presentations is limited to around 35 - 40. In case of a large number of selected contributions, a poster session and/or a parallel session may be considered.

All the oral presentations at the symposium will be projected onto the screen by a LCD projector and Windows laptop or Apple Power Book. Therefore all speakers are requested to bring their presentations prepared by PowerPoint or PDF files stored in USB memory, CD, or in their own laptops. No overhead projector for transparencies will be provided.

All these files will be posted on the RIKEN symposium website after the meeting so that everyone can get access to them.

Please make sure that the text in your file including all figure captions and labels is written in English.
